LiveSafe is an app that gives students, staff, and faculty an effective way to communicate with the Yale Police Department (YPD) and Yale Security.

Features of the LiveSafe app include:

  • SafeWalk: Invite friends and family to temporarily follow your location on a real-time map. They will see you on the map as you walk to your destination. You can chat directly within the app or summon emergency help.
  • Report Tips: Send tips about suspicious activity, a mental health issue, theft, or other campus concerns directly to the YPD. You can attach a picture, video, or audio and send it anonymously.
  • Request a Yale Security campus escort: Request a Yale Security campus escort quickly and easily by clicking on Walking Escort.
  • Lockout Assistance: Contact Yale Security to request a security officer open your locked dorm door.
  • Tracking Campus Shuttles: Follow campus shuttle routes in real time to plan your trip around the campus.
  • Emergency Options: Call or send text messages directly to the YPD. Your name and current location will be attached to the call or text, allowing YPD to assist you in an emergency.
  • Safety Map: Find nearby safe spots and get walking or driving directions to those areas.
  • Yale Status Board: Stay informed about critical events, outages, and service interruptions on campus.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • If your location setting is enabled, your location is shared with YPD when you use the Emergency Options or Report Tips feature.
  • With Emergency Options, your location will be actively monitored until you tap “stop sharing location.”
  • With Report Tips, a one-time location ping will be attached to any tip you submit, but your location will not be monitored.

Report Tips and the Call Campus Safety features should only be used to report on-campus situations. If you are off-campus and want to report an incident, call the New Haven Police Department, 911, or use the TIPS hotline at 1-866-888-8477.

No. In an emergency always dial 911. Use the Emergency Options button on the LiveSafe app to call YPD.

Report Tips should not replace calling 203-432-4400 to report campus-based police, fire, suspicious circumstances, or medical emergencies to YPD.

  1. Download the LiveSafe option with the blue shield.
  2. Enter your email and fill out your profile.
  3. Verify your email address by navigating to your email account and opening the message from LiveSafe. Tap the link embedded in the email.
  4. Open LiveSafe. Search for and select “Yale University” as your school.
