Approval Authority and Signature Authority are two important concepts that are related but distinct. Approval Authority is permission granted or delegated to approve University operational transactions. An approval attests to the appropriateness of the transaction within the University’s mission objectives. Many individuals across Yale hold Approval Authority at some level. Signature Authority, on the other hand, is permission granted or delegated to sign agreements, contracts, and other legally binding documents on behalf of Yale. A very limited number of individuals at Yale hold Signature Authority.
