Deborah Stanley-McAulay serves as the Associate Vice President of Employee Engagement & Workplace Culture, where she provides strategic leadership to advance Yale University’s culture, climate, and engagement priorities. She oversees the Office of Employee Engagement & Workplace Culture (EEWC), Work+Life, and the New Haven Hiring Initiative, ensuring these units work in concert to foster a high-performing organizational culture and strengthen Yale’s position as an employer of choice.
In her role, Deborah drives the University’s long-term strategy for strengthening culture and climate, ensuring an integrated vision and shared responsibility across departments. Under her leadership, EEWC collaborates closely with partners across the university to advance goals that enhance workplace culture, elevate the employee experience, and reinforce a climate grounded in respect and acceptance. These efforts directly support Yale’s commitment to being an employer of choice in higher education.
Deborah also serves as Yale’s chief liaison to the University’s ten Employee Resource Groups (ERGs): the Yale Black Culture Group (YBCG), Yale Latino Networking Group (YLNG), Asian Network at Yale (ANY), Yale University LGBTQ Employee Resource Group, Yale University Working Women’s Network (WWN), Yale Veterans Network (YVN), Future Leaders of Yale (FLY), DiversAbility at Yale (DAY), Indigenous Leaders at Yale (ILY), and Jews of Yale (JoY). These ERGs play a critical role in shaping the University’s culture and climate by elevating diverse perspectives, cultivating community, and fostering a culture of respect and acceptance among staff—key drivers of an employer-of-choice environment.
Through her leadership, Yale University has earned numerous distinctions for excellence in diversity, workplace culture, and employee climate, including the Diversity MBA Fifty Out Front (2012–2013), Working Mother (2012–2017), and the Work-Life Seal of Distinction (2013–2017). Deborah’s contributions have also been recognized through prestigious honors such as the 2012 Distinguished Service Award (Chi Omicron Chapter, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated), NAACP 100 Most Influential Black Leaders (2013 and 2021), 2015 Human Services Award (United House of Prayer), 2015 Tri-State Diversity Council Most Powerful & Influential Women, and the 2018 Tri-State Diversity & Leadership Conference Leadership Excellence Award.
Since joining Yale in 1995, Deborah has held a series of progressively responsible roles across the institution—including Manager of Training & Process Improvement, Sr. Training Consultant, Assistant Director, Director, and Organizational Development Consultant, and Chief Diversity Officer. Across each role, she has centered culture, climate, and leadership development as core pillars of organizational excellence and as foundational elements of becoming an employer of choice.
Prior to Yale, Deborah served in learning and development roles at several Connecticut institutions, including the Hospital of Saint Raphael, Stop & Shop Companies, New Haven Adult & Continuing Education Center, the New Haven Board of Education, and South Central Community College.
