Have you heard about the new Finance Professionals Forum?
November 28, 2016
Networking, storytelling, breakfast and more. Yale Finance’s inaugural Finance Professionals Forum took place Friday, November 4th, at 25 Science Park. The event drew nearly 70 members of the finance community, each with an important part to play in the organization’s success.
After an introduction by forum committee co-chair Michael DellaBianca, three participants shared highlights from their personal journeys to Yale. Their collective experience showcased a wide range of opportunities, achievements and setbacks.
First, Jack Callahan, senior vice president for operations and interim chief information officer, recalled struggling to win in marketing before pivoting to a more successful career in finance. In June he returned to Yale after years in the corporate boardroom, driven by a desire to give back to his alma mater.
Next, Deb Armitage, associate controller, revealed an eclectic resume including chemistry, mathematics, library science (she says she laughs too loudly for library work) and even basket-weaving. Her journey stretches from Vancouver to New Haven, where she has worked at Yale since 2001.
Finally, Kelly Moore, formerly of Yale Shared Services (YSS), explored the ups and downs of losing her job in banking, partnering with New Haven Works, and joining Yale as a casual employee. As of this month, she is the newest assistant director of the Law School business office—a promotion worth the wait, she says.
A question-and-answer session followed, touching on topics like Workday and employment resources. Participants then brainstormed activities for the next quarterly meeting in early 2017.
The forum committee would like to thank the speakers and participants for a successful kickoff. Committee members include Michael DellaBianca of YSS, Shirley Chock of Financial Planning & Analysis, Beth Labanara (Moyes) of Change Leadership & Communications (CLC), Bremen Leak of CLC, John Beecher of Business Solutions, Courtney Connors of the Controller’s Office, John DeNezzo of YSS, Julie Elak of Investment Accounting, Maria MacCalla of General Accounting, Lori Rasile of Financial Planning & Analysis, Deirdre Stowe of CLC, Monica Vella-Angelastro of YSS, and Chris Watkins of Business Solutions.
With support from Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer Stephen Murphy, the Finance Professionals Forum launched as part of the Employer of Choice initiative in September 2016. The forum’s goal is to leverage the knowledge and expertise of Yale Finance employees to help staff meet everyday challenges and strengthen networks.
