Yale names new CIO, John Barden
January 9, 2017
In a recently issued message, Senior Vice President, Jack Callahan, announces the new Associate Vice President and Chief Information Officer, John Barden, who will join the university in March 2017.
Provost Ben Polak and I are pleased to welcome John Barden, who will join us in early March, as the university’s Associate Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO). In his position, John will report to Ben and me.
As we continue to align resources to the highest priority initiatives and build operational excellence, the CIO will play an integral role in directing the strategy for the Information Technology (IT) organization. John’s proven ability to assess IT opportunities, collaborate with the community to prioritize goals, and implement effective change will complement and advance our efforts.
Since 2004, John has led teams across the Information Technology organization at the University of Rochester. In his most recent role as the Deputy Chief Information Officer he has provided leadership support across all facets of planning and delivery, and led the operational coordination of activities across central IT functions.
Among other accomplishments during his tenure at the university, John’s team successfully launched the university’s first institution-wide learning management solution, deployed an integrated data warehouse, completed several major administrative systems transitions, established an integrated research computing organization and infrastructure, and established a comprehensive information security program. In addition, John aided in establishing the IT governance model that engages the community in defining priorities across research, academic, administrative, and core technologies.
“Technology is increasingly embedded in almost all of what we do as an institution. Success requires real partnership, a service ethic, and operational excellence. I am excited to help evolve the information management and technology practices at Yale to support the aspirations of the faculty, researchers, students, and staff of this great institution,” said Barden.
John earned his B.A. in Economics and Management from Albion College and M.B.A. from the Simon School of Business at the University of Rochester. He and his wife, Polly Reeder, have two children, Owen (5) and Everett (7), who will join him as they transition to Connecticut.
Please join us in welcoming John Barden to the Yale community.
