New University Controller joining Yale in October

August 27, 2019

Steve Murphy, Vice President of Finance and CFO, recently shared the following information with the Yale Finance and Business Office staff.

After conducting a national search, I am very pleased to announce that Shannon Smith will  join Yale as the University Controller, reporting to me.

Shannon comes to us with over twenty years of experience at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) where she is a Managing Director, leading the Higher Education and Not-for-Profit Group for Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. She has played the lead role on the PwC audit team for Yale for over a decade, where I have come to know her as someone with the highest integrity and a broad-based knowledge of higher education financial management, accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls. What impressed me most about Shannon is her deep commitment to building strong teams and supporting the professional development of every team member, getting to know each person – and their diverse backgrounds, interests, and motivations. She has a proven track record of delivering high-quality results both in terms of what and how work is accomplished, a cornerstone of the positive work environment we are building in the Finance organization.

Shannon graduated with a B.S from Drexel University with a dual major in Accounting and Human Resources. She serves as Treasurer of the American Association of University Women in Connecticut and Treasurer and Executive Board member of the Boy Scouts, Connecticut River Council. As University Controller, Shannon serves as Yale’s Chief Accounting Officer, and she is a Certified Public Accountant in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, and California.

Shannon will join Yale on October 22 and will be located at 25 Science Park.

Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Shannon.

Thank you,
