Newly renovated Yale Child Study Center opens

November 21, 2019

In October, the Yale Child Study Center’s (CSC) new behavioral health care facility, at 350 George Street, opened with some fanfare. Yale Facilities and the School of Medicine hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony. Attendees of note included Mayor Toni Harp, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, and Yale School of Medicine Dean Robert Alpern.

The project involved moving the CSC’s clinical and community-based operations all under one roof and provided a bright and welcoming space now used by young patients and their families. The building’s work areas, 53,000 square feet total, are more than triple the combined space of CSC’s three prior facilities, previously located at York and Temple Streets and at South Frontage Road.

The project began in November 2018. By September 2019, all 220 staff members were moved into the space and each service opened for business. The space was designed by Svigals & Partners of New Haven, and the contractor of record was Standard Builders of Newington. Two Yale Facilities’ staff members who managed the renovation included planner Robynne Orr, and project manager, Marianne Klewin. The now completed area spreads over two floors.

The renovation included an entire makeover of the second and third floors that originally contained a data center, and therefore, was closed-off and dark. Installation of new exterior windows and a new stairway in the main lobby now brings in some natural light. The new waiting room is bright and open with a wooden tree as its center piece.

Along the new stairway are several hanging mobile sculptures resembling fish swimming upstream. Both floors previously contained cubicles, so many offices and walls had to be constructed, resulting in a total makeover for the interior. Updates included all new finishes, feature ceilings, new flooring, painting, and all new furniture.

Special thanks to Linda C. Mayes, MD, Arnold Gesell Professor of Child Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Psychology, and chair of the CSC; Erin Warnick, associate research scientist; and Ian Solomon, Director of Finance, CSC who worked closely with the facilities team throughout this entire project.
