Microsoft Windows 7 support extended to 2021

January 22, 2020

Microsoft initially committed to supporting the Windows 7 operating system for 10 years, concluding its support on January 14, 2020. However, in recognition of an estimated 40% of the world’s computers in a corporate environment running on Windows 7, Microsoft has agreed to extend its support, for a fee. ITS has procured and funded an additional year of extended support with Microsoft for Yale through January 14, 2021 so that we continue to receive technical support, software updates, and required security updates.

During this one-year window, ITS will work with all departments to upgrade computing equipment running Windows 7 operating systems to Windows 10. There will be some machines that, due to their age, cannot be upgraded and new machines will need to be purchased. ITS is in the process of identifying those machines and will share information with departments as soon as possible to assist with the budgeting and equipment remediation planning process. Lead Administrators should also reach out to their local IT support providers to discuss plans to address computers in their areas requiring remediation.

We recognize it may not be possible to replace or upgrade some computers due to unique configurations. Most often, these computers control instruments involved in research. These computers will be addressed on a case-by-case basis, ensuring the University is protected while allowing computers to function, as needed.

Departments that choose not to upgrade, nor to replace outdated hardware before the 2021 deadline, will be charged the cost incurred to continue another year of extended support for Windows 7 through January 14, 2022, which will be necessary to maintain Yale’s minimum-security standards.

Deployment of a related configuration change is underway for selected computers managed by ITS. Individuals with access to ServiceNow can view details within Change ticket CHG0073099 (login required).

IT partners who need access to the extended support multiple activation key (MAK) can contact Endpoint Engineering.
