IT Academy recommended training and events - July 2020

Hosted by the IT Staff Development team, Tech Talks and InfoSec Chats are part of a series of learning sessions for the IT community promoted through IT Academy’s recommended training and events. 

Each session features one of a wide variety of topics targeted toward IT professionals. The team also promotes other staff development opportunities. For July, these include both IT Academy Online Learning and Developer Lunch and Learn: Accessibility.

Please join the ITS Help Desk leadership team, Luis Ribeiro, Cynthia Welsh, and Bob Haig to get a glance inside one of the busiest services in ITS, from organizational structure to reporting. In this session, you will gain an understanding of how the Help Desk handles over 100,000 contacts per year while maintaining an 96% client satisfaction rating. Learn about the many reasons why individuals contact the Help Desk and how the team makes data driven decisions to improve the quality of support and the customer experience.

The ITS Help Desk provides first level support for multiple IT services. Find out how they do it. Are you thinking of collaborating with the Help Desk to free up time for your team to focus on strategy and improvement? Be a part of the conversation to determine how they can help you.

Miriam OlivaresTech Talks: Introduction to GIS & Apps (2-hours; hands-on/interactive)

This is the follow up of the Tech Talk, “The GIS Geek in You: Unlocking your Geospatial Power”, presented on May 13, 2020. If you didn’t attend, please watch the video prior to this training. 

In this workshop, Miriam Olivares and TC Chakraborty will teach you how to use Esri ArcGIS Online, create an app, and use Esri Notebooks to generate spatial visualizations. First, we will introduce the features of Yale’s ArcGIS Online. We will follow with a demonstration on how to create a dashboard similar to the Yale COVID-19 Global Cases Dashboard. All attendees will be able to use and learn the presented GIS tools during this session

IT Academy online learning

Additionally, continue your training and development on the IT Academy: Recommended Online Training web page. This resource includes recommended online courses, to enable staff to continue their training and development remotely. IT staff are encouraged to work with their manager to create a personalized development plan.

Developer Lunch and Learn: Accessibility

On Tuesday, July 7, from noon—1:15 p.m., join the Digital Accessibility team for a session on “404 Not Found: Error Messaging and Accessibility”. 

Learn how to provide accessible error identification to users with disabilities. Accessible error identification, in particular, benefits users who are blind or visually impaired and users with cognitive impairments. Good error identification has benefits for all users. Topics covered include: error identification on form submit, inline form error indication, alert box error messages, dynamic form validation, and color.
