Stock Trading Game tournament - Join ITS staff and play the market

April 1, 2021

In 1984, Yale School of Management (SOM) professor Roger Ibbotson, created a game for his students simulating the Stock Market. Players used playing cards to dictate the market, and the classroom acted as a trading floor. Students competed against one another to see who could accumulate the highest value stock – and the best grades.

35 years later, the Custom Application Development and Web Technologies teams updated the Stock Trading Game using Ruby on Rails to create an updated, modern version of the application and make it available to participants worldwide.

The team invites ITS staff members to join the Web and Mobile Application Development team for a Stock Trading Game tournament. Players will buy and sell virtual stocks while trying to game the market and see where they rank against their colleagues. The game’s creator, renowned financial scholar Professor Ibbotson will join at the end of the game and provide feedback and insight into the challengers’ performance. The event will include a practice game, the official ITS Stock Trading Game competition, and words from Professor Ibbotson.

All participants will walk away with a better understanding of the market, and the winner will receive the ultimate prize – bragging rights!

The game will be held virtually via Zoom on Friday, April 16, at 2:00 p.m.

ITS staff members interested in participating may register before 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 15.
