University transition from Skype for Business to Microsoft Teams tools completed successfully

May 26, 2021

Microsoft is retiring Skype for Business in July. Related to this effort, on May 21, ITS decommissioned all of Yale’s Skype for Business accounts to prepare for this change, and the University moved to Microsoft Teams tools to support chat and online calling. ITS migrated over 1600 Skype for Business users successfully to Microsoft Teams from January through May.

Haven’t tried Teams yet? The Microsoft Teams tool has similar chat and call functions to Skype. You can easily use Teams from any device. You will still be able to chat with non-University (i.e., YNHH) Skype for Business users if they initiate the chat. The system will automatically push the chat through to Teams, and the chat will be limited to one-to-one text-only. For helpful tutorials, reference the Microsoft Teams service page.

Personal Skype accounts are unrelated to Skype for Business accounts and were not impacted by the University’s retirement of Skype for Business.
