IT Academy Curriculum web page

We are pleased to announce our new IT Academy Curriculum web page. As the IT Academy continues to expand its curriculum and learning opportunities, we have created a new web page to search and find courses, training, speaker series videos, and more. Using the new filtering capability, you can find training courses supporting our ITS Organization Priorities, including Service Quality, One IT at Yale, and Workplace of Choice. Filters also exist for IT Competencies, IT Academy Goals, IT Roles, and by topic. We welcome input and other training to add to this tool; please contact paul.gruhn@yale.edu for more information or to suggest an addition to the curriculum.

Developer Lunch and Learn: Accessibility

On Tuesday, September 21, from noon—1:15 p.m., join the Digital Accessibility team for a session on Accessibility.

More and more complex data surrounds us in our daily lives. Dashboards are often a solution to organize and display complex data, but are they accessible? In this presentation, we will introduce you to accessible dashboard design and development. We will cover key design considerations, Gestalt principles, accessible use of color, information display methods, and how to make your dashboard accessible to assistive technology users.

Pre-register for the September 21 Lunch and Learn training in Yale’s Training Management System (TMS). Login to Yale’s Virtual Private Network (VPN) may be required. The Zoom link will be emailed to individuals registered for the training session.

Howard Gilbert“Adapting a Home Network for Hybrid Work” with Howard Gilbert

Wednesday, September 15
3:00 - 4:30 p.m.
via Zoom (Online only)

Please join Howard Gilbert, Sr. Software Engineer, for this very practical Tech Talk on how to best set up your home network.

Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) provides you with a gateway device, creating a simple generic consumer-friendly home network. You can use it as-is for work, but maybe you should separate the part of the network where your kids game with their friends from where you do professional work.

Some configuration tricks, free software, and a few $10 or $20 options can create separate zones optimized for family or work. Howard will present a large set of tricks, and you can choose any that look useful.

“Erasing Invisibility: Creating an Indigenous Student Ready University” with Angie Makomenaw and Dr. Matthew Makomenaw

Wednesday, September 22
3:00 - 4:30 p.m.

The contemporary story of Native Americans, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, and other Indigenous peoples is fraught with historical and cultural inaccuracies and harmful stereotypes.

In addition, the prevailing narrative of Native people in education is one of failure, trauma, deficit-based, and invisibility. However, what is omitted about Native people is their strength, resistance, humor, and stories of triumph.

This presentation will uncover misconceptions of Native people and culture historically, legally, and contemporary while centering the conversation on how we as a university can reflect and work to create a welcoming and inclusive campus for Native students, parents, faculty, staff, and tribal nations.
