The Yale Police Department welcomes New Officer Angelo DeLieto

March 31, 2022

The Yale Police Department (YPD) recently added three new officers to their force: Gregg Curran, Angelo DeLieto, and Karl Rodriguez-Perez. All three are experienced officers who came to Yale from other police departments in the area. Please join us in welcoming them to Yale.

We talked with Officer Angelo DeLieto about his career, the importance of community relations, and his impressions of the Yale campus.

Officer DeLieto grew up in Hamden, Connecticut, and attended Southern Connecticut State University, receiving a B.S. in Sociology. Angelo also holds an M.S. in emergency management from the University of New Haven.

After 21 successful years with the Hamden Police Department, as a patrol officer and then detective, Angelo joined the Yale Police Department in February.

What made you decide to come to Yale?

Yale University is one of the premier learning intuitions in the United States. I couldn’t think of a better place to continue my career as a police officer. Also, I want to help the department in any way that I can, bringing with me over 20 years of law enforcement experience. I like what the YPD is doing to foster community relations with the Yale and New Haven communities and am excited to be part of that. Police departments and their officers can be more successful when they have a good and open relationship with their community.

How has your experience been so far?

It’s been exciting, when I got the call that Yale hired me; wow, I was happy! In my first few weeks on the job, I’m learning about the campus, working days and evenings. The campus is much bigger than I anticipated; there are lots of buildings. The Sterling Memorial Library and Woolsey Hall are incredible inside. I’m walking around campus learning where everything is; it’s massive and beautiful. I am also getting my steps in! Everyone has been really supportive.

Fun fact about yourself.

When I’m not working, I value time with my family. My wife and I have two young girls. We spend time together outdoors, including hiking, summer times spent at the beach, and now I’m teaching them how to play golf. Also, there is an abundance of kid’s sports. I’m a big New York Yankees fan and love to attend games when I can.Officer Angelo DeLieto
