Virtual Reality as a Research Tool

Thursday April 28, 1:00 - 2:30 p.m.
Zoom Webinar and panel discussion
Register in advance

The Blended Reality Project at Yale is hosting a 90-minute session panelists from Yale, Syracuse University, and HP to discuss Virtual Reality (VR) platforms for research and inspirational examples from their own research on incorporating VR into the research study.

VR technology provides researchers with tools to rapidly prototype test environments that immerse subjects into an experience, while providing data on eye gaze, pupil dilation, and other reactive measures.

The ability to rapidly iterate scenarios without the limitations of managing a physical location offers new ways to think about the design of a research study. Costs and capabilities of VR equipment and authoring tools are rapidly improving, bringing these techniques within reach for research teams.

FY22 Diversity and Inclusion training (required for ITS staff)

Following a successful pilot with ITS leaders, managers, and staff supervisors, we are ready to offer Diversity Monologues training to all ITS staff. This training builds on the Unconscious Bias curriculum we launched in FY21, supporting our IT Competencies and the Workplace of Choice strategic anchor.

In support of the IT Workplace of Choice strategic anchor, IT FY22 Diversity and Inclusion Training assists employees to better work with others of differing abilities, backgrounds, nationalities, and genders. This emphasizes being inclusive of all employees and explains the benefits of doing so.

In this course, we will explore a diversity monologue, review the diversity leadership model, and discuss ways in which they can create a more inclusive culture for persons within the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer community.  The skills learned in this course can help to establish an organization-wide culture, which can aid in cultivating healthy relationships with everyone we work with.

Access the FY22 ITS D&I training through Yale’s Training Management System (TMS). Login to Yale’s Virtual Private Network (VPN) may be required.

Upcoming sessions

  • Monday, April 18 (2:00 - 3:30 p.m.)

Timothy Wright and Colby Laracuente present a discussion of their work creating an application security validation tool based on the Open Web Application Security Project’s Application Security Verification Standard (OWASP ASVS - https://owasp.org/www-project-application-security-verification-standard/) – a foundational list of web application technical security controls and development requirements. The current version of the ASVS is 4.0.3.

Tim and Colby are taking the OWASP ASVS, which is not an automated tool, and building an automated tool to attempt to test actual web applications to verify that those ASVS controls that can be tested are checked by using the OWASP ZAP proxy.

They are breaking new ground with their work on this project.  Colby has been developing and testing a number of ZAP proxy “scripts” to determine the absence or presence of specific ASVS “controls”.
