Tell us about yourself.

Hello! My name is Amariah Rodriguez; I am a 2021 grad from Eastern Connecticut State University with a degree in Digital Art and Design. After graduation, I returned to my beautiful hometown, New Haven, to begin my professional career. In my free time, I enjoy painting and drawing, exploring the city, eating delicious food, and playing video games!

Tell us about your job search.

It was not easy! I knew it would be difficult to obtain a job right out of school, but I did not recognize how challenging and frustrating it would be. Due to the pandemic, I believe many recent grads have not experienced an exciting and welcoming job market. Looking for a full-time job was disheartening, even as a person with a bachelor’s degree and work experience. At times, job postings would make me feel unqualified and that higher pay was out of reach. Navigating my job search was not easy and it took time.

You joined New Haven Works during your job search. What was that experience like?

It was a huge relief! I finally had guidance navigating an intimidating job search process. I was grateful to meet my mentor from New Haven Works; she continues to guide me in my career. She taught me to consider different factors in job applications, plus she inspired me to network. During my time with New Haven Works, I learned that there are people from all walks of life, age, race, and education, looking for a career change or a profession. It opened my eyes outside of just being a young person trying to land my first professional job. I am not alone, and we all could use a helping hand in our job searches.

Tell us about your current role at Yale.

I am the Human Resources Administrative Assistant for the Yale University Art Gallery (YUAG). I provide onboarding support to new employees, hire interns, students, and fellows, problem-solve, and help people! I enjoy learning, and there has not been a moment without it. This role encourages me to improve my skills and use creativity to figure out new ways to complete tasks better and more effectively. Everyone at the YUAG is supportive and they have provided me with the freedom to grow. I have a passion for art and knowing that I play a role in the success of such an impressive institution is very fulfilling.

What is your advice for recent graduates and young professionals looking for employment?

Give yourself time, be persistent, and celebrate your wins! I put so much pressure on myself to find a job post-graduation that I did not let myself celebrate the result of four years of hard work (1 ½ of those years taking place during a pandemic). It took time to realize that people must forge their own paths; there is no “correct” or “best option” to determine YOUR future. It was not mandatory to obtain my first “real” job after graduation. When interacting with friends, we all shared our career paths and realized we initiated our professions differently. It takes time, lots of applications, resume edits, and practicing for interviews. Each job application/interview brings you closer to the result. Make sure to talk to those around you who have already done it, figure out what you want, and go for it. We are all wishing you the absolute best!
