New Haven Promise Summer Internship 2022
September 28, 2022
The 2022 New Haven Promise Internship season concluded August 12th with an in-person end-of-summer celebration. The in-person event concluded a summer of hybrid internships that saw the return of interns to campus for the first time since the summer of 2019. The event brought together managers and interns to share their experiences throughout the summer.
New Haven Promise engaged 20 Yale departments and 26 New Haven organizations to place 113 virtual and hybrid interns this summer, a 24% increase from last year. Yale hosted 50 interns this summer, an increase of 14% from last summer. We are thankful for all the departments that have supported the increase from Summer 2021.
The support of the Yale departments over the last three summers allowed Promise Scholars to gain valuable work experience during an unprecedented time. Over the summer, the New Haven Promise interns participated in professional development workshops like “Growing your Network (including LinkedIn)” and “Microsoft Office Skill-up.” Interns also worked on special projects within their departments.
This summer, Aliah Segui and Alondra Martinez, the Yale HR Interns, supported the New Haven Hiring Initiative, WorkLife, Diversity Programs, and Talent Acquisitions. They learned new technology like Qualtrics and STARS, practiced public speaking, analyzed data via Excel, researched information, and enhanced their content creation skills using Canva and Adobe. These skills were highlighted through their intern project to create and host a fun-filled community event for National Intern Day, July 28th, 2022.
Ammon Downer, a rising senior at UCONN, majoring in Fine Arts, supported Jessica Sack, Jan, and Frederick Mayer Curator of Public Education, Yale University Art Gallery. Ammon led sessions for school-age groups at the Yale University Art Gallery. He also supported online programming, “Arts in Mind” for those with early-onset memory loss. Ammon enjoyed his experience, and his impactful presence was recognized by the department. Jessica stated, “We appreciated his creativity, dedication, and enthusiasm.”
Adam Tereq and Toby Ifeanyi Ferguson supported Wendy Rawlins in Yale Procurement. The Promise interns were able to assist the department in engaging with 17,713 existing suppliers via email. They learned new skills such as navigating the Salesforce application and the Workday procurement module via “Find Supplier.” Wendy states, “Our Promise interns were productive, professional, and worked well together to accomplish the data collection and validation efforts of the Supplier Diversity program.”
August 12th’s end-of-summer celebration saw the return of Tubyez Cropper, Community Engagement Program Manager-Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library. Tubyez, a Promise graduate and former Yale intern who attended Franklin and Marshall College, provided a poignant address during the end of the summer celebration. Tubyez shared his journey of navigating internships at Yale, landing a Fellowship at Beinecke, taking on a temporary position, to securing his current position. He provided the following remarks to managers:
“Managers, what you do is no small accomplishment either! You are transforming New Haven into the ideal land of opportunity. You are giving students a reason to stay in New Haven or like me, a reason to come back to New Haven, and give back to the community that they grew up in. You are contributing to the growth of the New Haven community. With the gradual expansion of New Haven Promise and employer contributions, we can make New Haven a home of prosperous collaboration.”
Tubyez’ s keynote provided a wonderful finish to a summer of opportunity and truly embodied the Promise model of “To, Through, and Back.”
