NHHI Hiring Spotlight – Josette Wilkins.

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Josette (Josie). I’m a New Haven resident and a previous participant in the New Hiring Haven Initiative (NHHI). I have a background in Human Services working with the mentally disabled, but I decided to change my career path to look for an opportunity for growth. After careful consideration, I decided to focus on becoming a Customer Service Rep / Administrative Assistant.

Tell us about your job searches.

I applied to local organizations like Yale New Haven Hospital and Albertus Magnus College, and then I was offered a full-time 6-month temporary position at Yale University on the HR Operations team. As the six-month position was ending, my co-worker (Victor Fuentes) recommended me for a one-year fixed-duration position at the front desk of Human Resources, which turned into a full-time role.

You joined New Haven Works during your job search. What was that experience like?

I joined New Haven Works in 2019 while working full-time as a shuttle driver. I have always had a heart for people and decided I was not fulfilling my calling in life. I explained my passion to my job coach at New Haven Works (NHW), who helped me create a better resume and cover letter. I also applied his wisdom and knowledge about the employment process. Soon after, I became a Customer Service Rep (CSR) and advanced to a CSR 2 within a year. My experience was great! I’m thankful to New Haven Works and NHHI.

Tell us about your current role at Yale.

My current role at Yale is as a Senior Administrative Assistant. I’m the smiling face that gives you a warm greeting at the Welcome Desk at 221 Whitney Ave. I’m in a dual position where I work for a great manager (Rachelle Ianniello) on two awesome teams, the Employee Service Center and the I-9 Center.

What advice do you have for other job seekers?

I advise job seekers to know what career they want to pursue, then go for it, and not let anyone or anything stop them. Make short-term goals along your journey to help you to achieve your long-term career goals. Once you apply yourself and stay focused…. nothing is impossible!
