Scheduled Outages to Network and Phones - various dates: May 15 - June 23

Summary

  • On various dates, beginning on May 15 and running through June 23, Yale ITS will upgrade the campus network software, specifically impacting networks and phones for all buildings that have already transitioned to the Next Generation Network (NGN)
  • This maintenance involves four separate multi-day phases based on physical location; all outages will occur between 7 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. during each maintenance window - see Details for more information. 
  • Additional email messaging will follow approximately one week before each outage. We are communicating to you earlier so that you may familiarize yourself with which NGN Site impacts your building or department, should you need this information for planning purposes.

Why is ITS performing this maintenance?

This work applies a routine software upgrade to increase the security and stability of the network.

  • NGN Site A - Mon., May 15 - Fri., May 19
    • Hill House, Science Hill, Science Park, Upper Prospect
  • NGN Site B - Mon., June 5 - Fri., June 9
    • Athletic Fields, Cross Campus, Old Campus
  • NGN Site C - Mon., June 12 - Fri., June 16
    • Medical Campus, VA Campus
  • NGN Site D - Mon., June 19 - Fri., June 23
    • West Campus

How to determine which NGN site includes your building

View the NGN sites web page to see a map of NGN Sites by campus area. You may also view the NGN status web page to check if your building has been converted to NGN. On this page, you may use the “View Larger Map” option to expand the map to full size; the full-sized map provides a search function allowing you to type in a building address.

Impact

Expect an up-to-thirty-minute outage during your respective scheduled maintenance to the following:

  • Telephones:
    • call centers
    • convenience phones (waiting area phones for building visitors
    • desk phones, softphones (Avaya and Cisco), and Voice Over IP (VOIP) phones
    • fax lines
  • Remote access to on-campus computers
  • Voice Over IP (VOIP)
  • The Yale networks: wired and Wifi (Eduroam, Yale Guest, Yale Secure, and yalewireless)

Important notes about telephones 

  • Phones (excluding health, life, and safety blue emergency phones used to call the Yale Police in emergencies, area of refuge phones, and elevator phones) - will experience an up-to-thirty-minute outage, causing:
    • Active phone calls in progress may drop.
    • Phones may experience no dial tone or restart multiple times.
    • Phone menu prompts and phone tree options may not function normally.

Excluded from the maintenance

  • Health, life, and safety blue emergency phones used to call the Yale Police in emergencies, area of refuge phones, and elevator phones
  • University phones located within Yale New Haven Hospital
  • Connections between the University and YNHH
  • Voicemail
