Spotlight – Godfrey Harris
June 26, 2024
Tell us about yourself.
I’m Godfrey Harris, a clinical receptionist who got my start through the New Haven Works Pathways program. I currently reside in the New Haven area, and I’ve lived in this community for several years. I enjoy exploring the vibrant neighborhoods, and in my free time, I like playing basketball and engaging in community volunteer work. Before joining Yale, I held various positions in customer service and administrative roles. I am not a New Haven Promise Scholar, but I’m proud to be part of a community that supports such initiatives.
Tell us about your job search experience.
New Haven Works had a significant impact on my job search experience. They helped me identify my skills and traits that are valuable to employers. I was frustrated with the temp agency process I was dealing with, but within 6-8 months of working with New Haven Works, I was offered a permanent position at Yale University. Their support and guidance were instrumental in my success.
Tell us about your current roles at Yale.
I support medical providers and senior administrators by scheduling patients for various departments within the Yale Health Center. My day-to-day responsibilities involve addressing patient care issues and coordinating doctor availability. My role has evolved significantly since I started at Yale. Initially, I worked as a navigator at the COVID vaccination centers during the pandemic. Transitioning to a clinical receptionist role was a big leap, but my previous experience with scheduling and information programs helped ease the shift. The most impactful factor was how I engaged and communicated with my colleagues, which caught the attention of my employer.
What advice do you have for other jobseekers?
My advice is to stay patient and be persistent in your job search. Set realistic goals for yourself and map out a way to achieve them. Use every resource available to you, as the more information and knowledge you have, the better your chances of success. Lean on your job coach for advice and direction—they know what’s needed to appeal to employers.
What was the most helpful aspect? What would you say to other applicants with research goals?
The most helpful aspect was using every resource possible. Gathering as much information and knowledge as you can significantly increases your chances of success. I would advise other applicants to rely on their job coach for guidance and direction. They understand what employers are looking for and can provide invaluable support.
What is next for you?
My next steps are to keep progressing up the ranks into a leadership position. I aim to develop my skills further and take on more responsibilities within my department. I also plan to get involved in campus activities and programs, such as affinity groups and the Homebuyer’s Program, to grow both personally and professionally.
Feel free to share any experiences or goals for campus involvement (for example, affinity groups, Homebuyer’s Program), development and learning in your department/role, or personal aspirations.
I look forward to getting involved in various campus initiatives, like affinity groups, which provide a great opportunity for networking and professional growth. The Homebuyer’s Program is also of interest to me as I plan for my future. In my current role, I am focused on continuous learning and development, aiming to refine my skills and take on leadership positions in the future.
