Spotlight Candidate: Ebony Lewis, Clinical Receptionist 2, YTSS
July 24, 2024
Tell us about yourself.
I was born and raised in New Haven, CT. During my high school years, I lived in Ansonia, CT, but I currently reside in the Beaver Hill section of New Haven. My favorite pastimes include reading urban fiction novels and spending quality time with my family. Before joining Yale University, I worked at Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) for 17 years in various clerical and administrative roles within the registration department of the OR, including pre-op and post-op.
Tell us about your job search experience.
Initially, I interviewed for the Care Center during its infancy stage, but that opportunity did not materialize. Despite this setback, I remained determined to pursue opportunities within the university. My primary goal was to put myself in a better position to support my family. Although I was gainfully employed, I recognized it was time for a change, and I kept pushing forward to achieve my goals.
How did your participation in New Haven Works impact your experience? What was your experience like?
New Haven Works played a significant role in my job search journey. They helped me refresh my interviewing skills and improve my resume writing. They provided an overall support system throughout the entire process. My coach was always available to answer any questions I had at any time. I would highly recommend New Haven Works to anyone seeking employment or looking for better opportunities with a new company.
Tell us about your current roles at Yale.
I currently work for Yale Temporary Staffing Services (YTSS) as a Clinical Receptionist 2 under Kristen Maloney. In this role, I cover different departments within the university on temporary assignments. So far, I have worked for the VST, Smilow Hem/Oncology, and currently, Yale Medicine Digestive Diseases. YTSS allows me to experience the university uniquely, as I gain knowledge and skills by working in various departments. This opportunity also enables me to meet new people and form new friendships, contributing to my professional growth.
What advice do you have for other jobseekers?
Do not get discouraged. Every “no” is an opportunity for something better. Remember why you started this journey and try your best to remain positive. You are one decision away from your new beginning. The most helpful aspect for me was having a support system through New Haven Works and maintaining a positive mindset throughout the process.
What is next for you?
Within the next year, I aim to go back to school to earn my Bachelor of Science degree in Healthcare Administration. That is where my focus is right now. Additionally, I plan to get more involved in campus activities, such as affinity groups and the Homebuyer’s Program, to further my personal and professional development.
