Yale Police Department joins regional auto theft task force

November 11, 2024

The Yale Police Department joins other municipalities in partnering with the New Haven Police Department (NHPD) to form a regional auto theft task force.

Spearheaded by NHPD, Chief of Police Karl Jacobson said at a recent press conference that the auto theft task force was created to identify the car thieves and make arrests.

Yale Police Chief Anthony Campbell said the department is pleased to collaborate with the NHPD and other regional agencies in the joint auto task force.

“Yale University is not exempt from these risks, and every vehicle theft presents an opportunity for criminals to use the stolen car in ways that endanger our community,” said Campbell. “The task force, with support from officers across the region, is designed to be both proactive and responsive in addressing those who would cause harm.”

Chief Jacobson shared a few highlights at the press conference since the task force was formed on October 12, 2024. He said 14 people have been arrested, nine stolen cars and three illegal firearms were recovered.

The Yale Police and leaders from municipalities in New Haven County including, Ansonia, Naugatuck and Orange will allocate two officers from every shift to share intelligence, technology, and work together to hold the thieves accountable.
