Absence Management and Accommodations Services

Welcome

Welcome to Absence Management and Accommodations Services. Our team is here to help connect you with the programs and resources to support you. Life brings forward a variety of changes. You may have encountered illness or injury for yourself, or a family member. Perhaps you are expanding your family, taking part in military service or you have a permanent disability.

For these and other reasons, there are instances where you may need to take time away from work or you need an accommodation to stay at work. Our team can help guide you towards the services you need to move forward.

Yale programs include: Staff Leaves of Absence, Workers’ Compensation, Workplace Possibilities, and Staff Accommodations.

Throughout this website, you will find links to overviews of the different programs. You will also find information about income replacement, as well as any affiliated state paid leave options.

If you have any questions about these programs, we are here to help answer your questions.

How We Help

The Yale Absence Management and Accommodations Services team is here to support the Yale community with inquiries regarding staff leaves of absence, staff accommodations and workers’ compensation through email, phone, or in-person. To connect with a member of our team, please email Employee Services at employee.services@yale.edu or call 203-432-5552, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Please note that in-person meetings must be scheduled in advance.

Who is The Standard?

The Standard is Yale’s third-party administrator for staff leaves of absence and, starting April 1, 2023, for staff accommodations. Note: At this time, the Standard does not handle faculty and postdocs leaves of absence, or accommodations. Please check with your administrative affairs processing team if you are a faculty member or a postdoc.

Regarding leaves of absence, The Standard manages the administrative components of taking a leave, including: conducting a verbal intake with staff, processing an online application, confirming staff eligibility, sending/receiving/reviewing supporting medical documentation, communicating with medical providers, approving or denying leaves, tracking leave time used, and maintaining the online portal. The internal Yale Absence Management team assists staff with timesheets, accrual usage, pay, benefits, and understanding Yale policy.

Regarding accommodations, The Standard manages the administrative paperwork, accepts the intake form, works with staff to gather medical documentation and communicate with providers, and handles equipment requests. The internal Yale Accommodations team engages in the interactive process after the staff member requests an accommodation and has provided medical documentation, and supports employees and departments in determining appropriate accommodations.

What is the Connecticut Paid Family and Medical leave program?

The Connecticut Paid Family and Medical leave program (CT PFML) was implemented under state law. It provides eligible employees with income replacement from the state of Connecticut for qualified leave of absences. Generally, the leaves that qualify for paid time mirror the types of leaves that qualify under the Federal FMLA, Connecticut FMLA, and CT Family Violence Leave Act.

Employees who receive this income replacement may be eligible to receive income replacement for up to 12 weeks in a 12 month period of time. The amount of income replacement depends on the employee’s income, and calculated by a formula up to a cap of $941.40 per week (rate subject to change at the state’s discretion).

Learn more about how paid leave applies to you on the CT Paid Leave website. Connecticut Paid Family and Medical Leave does not provide job-protected time away from work. This program provides eligible staff members with income replacement benefits. Job-protected time away from work is available under FMLA and related policies, which are administered by The Standard for staff.
