Wages and Job Summaries

Wages

The University’s compensation structure consists of many salary grades and bands. Information listed on our Wage Ranges page is broad, since many types of positions are included in each of the grades/bands. While the salary for a specific position will fall within this range, there are a number of factors also taken into consideration to determine the final salary. Those factors include: education and experience, internal equity, and budget.

Additional information on wages for Students and Temporary Employees is available, but only accessible to internal staff.

Job Summaries

Yale develops standard job summaries to describe jobs commonly performed across the university. These summaries are typically customized with the details of the position, describing how it is unique to a particular department.

Changing Job Category

As you grow in your career at Yale, you may be interested in a position with a different job category (M&P, C&T, etc.) than the one you currently hold. A change in job category can affect your eligibility for certain benefits and the features of those benefit programs, as well as how much paid time off you receive, how you accrue it, and how much you can carry over. In addition, the amount that you contribute for health care benefits (medical and dental) can change significantly.

The impact on your benefits will vary depending on several factors, including your length of service at the university, current PTO balances, carryover limits, current medical plan, and retirement elections.

As a result, we strongly encourage you to contact Employee Services at 203-432-5552 or employee.services@yale.edu for additional information if you are considering a position with a different job category.

Background Checks

If you accept a job offer at Yale, a background check will be performed prior to completing the hiring process. Background checks are in place to create a consistent, thorough and reliable pre-employment screening program, intended to confirm the background of candidates as they present it, using data that is freshly retrieved so that Yale may hire the best and most appropriate candidate for the job.
