1. Overview

This procedure supports Policy 4302 Student-Access Shop and Tool Safety Policy and outlines the process and requirements for applying to open a new Student-Access Shop at Yale University. All applications must be submitted to Environmental Health and Safety (“EHS”) for preliminary review and forwarded to the Shop Safety Committee for review and approval.  No Shop activities are permitted until the committee grants final approval.

2. Requesting a New Student-Access Shop

To request a new Student-Access Shop, the applicant must complete each of the steps below:

  1. Complete Form 4302 FR.03 New Student-Access Shop Request Form. This form requires general information about the shop, location, operations, and intended use.
  2. Complete Form 4302 FR.05 Student-Access Shop Operational Plan. This form is where the requestor provides information on safety protocols, hours of operation, training plans, and a staffing plan.
  3. Review Procedure 4302 PR.02 Student-Access Shop Safety Minimum Standards and plan for implementation.
  4. Provide a list of major equipment that will be housed in the Shop (e.g., CNC machines, lathes, saws).
  5. Review Shop site location with EHS by arranging a walkthrough of the proposed location with EHS.
  6. EHS submits the completed application to the Shop Safety Committee for review and decision.
    • If approved, proceed to steps 7-9.
  7. Submit Form 4302 FR.04 Student-Access Shop Manager Candidate Assessment along with the candidate’s resume to EHS.
  8. Plan for, and complete, training requirements. The shop manager and monitors must complete:
    • CPR;
    • First Aid;
    • AED training; and
    • EHS Safety Training.
  9. The Shop must develop an annual training plan for all users and ensure training is documented.

Once all conditions are met, EHS will confirm compliance, and the shop may officially open.
