Public Safety Advisory Safety and Security Through Solidarity

A message from Chief Anthony Campbell Dear Yale Community, I write to you to discuss the seriousness of events which have taken place in the last 72 hours. Violence, local or across the country, demands that we stand in solidarity. I’m sure that you heard about the horrific events that occurred this weekend in California on the eve of the Lunar New Year. A time of celebration was filled with tragedy for so many. We mourn with the families who lost loved ones and send our thoughts and prayers to those recovering from their injuries. Here is a list of resources available to the community. - Officer Gabrielle Cotto, Sensitive Crimes Support Coordinator for YPD, can be reached at 203-432-9547 or mailto:gabrielle.cotto@yale.edu gabrielle.cotto@yale.edu . - Y https://yalehealth.yale.edu/group-therapy-offerings-semester ale Health offers various group therapies including one that is focused solely on trauma.Public Safety will have a significant presence at Lunar Fest 2023 to ensure that everyone in attendance has a safe and fun experience. I also want to share with you that Friday evening at 10:41 p.m., a female Yale student was assaulted by two juveniles in front of Phelps Gate. She was taken to the hospital for her injuries. She was treated and released. The student gave Yale Police Department officers a description of her assailants. Once they were located, they corroborated their involvement in the assault in the presence of their parents, and were subsequently arrested. It is important to note that there were four to five teens present during the assault who encouraged the offenders. They fled the area once the assault occurred. I did not send out a timely warning because the two assailants were arrested and no longer posed a threat to the community. In December, I informed you about teens throwing rocks and causing disturbances in the downtown area. This trend has not stopped. The New Haven Police Department and the YPD are deploying more resources in the area to keep the community safe. We can use your help. Here is a list of tips to ensure the safety of our community. - Watch your surroundings - Travel together, if possible - Utilize the Blue phones - https://your.yale.edu/community/public-safety/stay-safe-campus/livesafe-app Download and use the LiveSafe App to reach YPD dispatch if you feel unsafe - Walking escorts are available 24 hours a day on campus.
