November 13, 2025
Dear Yale community members,
I am writing to share that Associate Director of Public Safety and Yale Police Department (YPD) Chief Anthony Campbell, ‘95 B.A., ‘09 M.Div., has accepted a new position outside of Yale University. Chief Campbell will continue leading the department until January 2, 2026.
Until we name Chief Campbell’s successor, I will assume responsibility for the management of the Yale Police Department and facilitate any necessary organizational realignment to maintain high levels of visibility, rapid response, and investigative and victim services.
Additionally, with the upcoming retirement of Assistant Chief Von Narcisse on February 1, 2026, YPD Captain John Healy will assume the role of Acting Assistant Police Chief. He will supervise daily operations with support from Assistant Chief of Administration Rose Dell.
During this transition period, YPD will continue to foster a safe campus environment and build on the successes of a collaborative public safety model and other positive programs, including the “fit-for-purpose” response model and the use of Free Expression Facilitators.
I extend heartfelt thanks to Chief Campbell for his commitment to service and to the safety of our Yale community. His lengthy career in law enforcement began in 1998 in the New Haven Police Department. After becoming the Chief of Police for the city in 2016, he joined the YPD in 2019 as assistant chief and was named Chief of Police in 2022. His dedication to both Yale and the City of New Haven stands as a testament to service beyond self, and I admire his devotion to his faith, his family, co-workers, friends, and community. I wish him, his wife, Stephanie, and their boys all the best as they embark on a new chapter.
Sincerely,
Duane Lovello
Head of Public Safety
