Yale Public Safety (YPS) is pleased to announce that the university’s new Public Safety Operations Center (PSOC) is now operational. This state-of-the-art facility combines previously separate public safety operation centers into a centralized hub, enhancing the monitoring of safety systems and management of emergency calls. The project also includes Yale’s new Coordination and Training Center, an adjacent space to host public safety trainings and meetings for collaborative incident management. This integration of security and training resources strengthens YPS’s 24/7 campus-wide emergency response capabilities.
The creation of the PSOC underscores the university’s commitment to the safety of its students, faculty, and staff. This initiative implements a key recommendation from the consulting firm 21CP Solutions to consolidate Yale Public Safety’s disparate communications and monitoring centers. Yale had engaged 21CP Solutions in 2020 to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the Yale Police Department, ultimately evaluating all YPS functions.
“The myriad recommendations offered by the 21CP report provided Yale Public Safety with a roadmap of opportunity that ultimately positions Yale as a leader in campus public safety,” said Duane Lovello, head of YPS. “Recommended improvements in technology, operations, response protocols, training, and facilities not only provided a launching point, but a solid foundation on which to build practices and systems that would grow and evolve to meet the needs of a dynamic campus environment. Events having occurred since the issuance of 21CP report and the practices implemented as a result have paid dividends to the betterment of our campus community.”
The PSOC unites multiple operations into one space to improve campus safety communications and facilitate more efficient collaboration. These operations include Yale Security communications officers, cultural properties employees monitoring security at select university galleries and museums, and personnel monitoring West Campus systems. Preliminary discussions are underway regarding a relocation of Yale Police Dispatch.
“The Public Safety Operations Center is an important physical embodiment and asset supporting the differentiated response model advocated for by faculty and staff in our work with 21CP,” said John Barden, vice president for Information Technology and Campus Services, who oversees YPS. “This space brings together all observation and dispatch functions across security, cultural properties, and police to respond to our community needs in a fully integrated and coordinated way.”
The university transformed a 7,500-square-foot call center into the PSOC and the Coordination and Training Center, purpose-built to enhance real-time coordination and response. The space includes ten strategically positioned workstations with individual monitors affording access to critical communication and dispatch platforms, a large video wall of security camera displays, supervisor offices, and a break room. It is equipped with the latest technology to support public safety response. In the event of an emergency, YPS and other university leaders now have a dedicated place to convene and coordinate their response.
