Reduction in Effort

The minimum effort commitment required must be met for the reporting period being certified. Prior approval must be sought from the sponsor to reduce effort for the affected periods.

When requesting a reduction in committed effort to a project, sponsor policy must be followed. Specific to the NIH, prior approval is required for any reduction of effort 25% or greater from the level that was approved at the time of the initial competing year award.

Please note that NIH “K” awards have minimum effort requirements that must be met as a condition of the award. Any reduction in effort requires prior approval from the Grants Management Specialist (GMS). See Prior Approval Letter Templates at the bottom of our Prior Approval Requests page for additional assistance or reach out to your OSP award manager.

All prior approval documents must be sent to your GCAT Mailbox so they can be logged to the correct OSP Award manager.
