Disability - Faculty Members

Eligibility

Faculty members with an appointment of half-time or more are automatically enrolled in the Long-Term Disability Base Plan. The plan is offered at no cost to faculty and provides a benefit on base salaries up to $150,000.

Benefit

Under the Base Plan, on the first of the month following 180 days (6-month elimination period) of total disability, faculty members are entitled to receive 60% of their base monthly earnings to a maximum of $7,500 minus any other payments received, such as Workers’ Compensation or Social Security disability payments.

Faculty participating in Supplemental Disability Coverage (see below) have an additional maximum of $12,500 of coverage. The monthly benefit will not be less than $100.

The insurance carrier for this coverage is The Standard Insurance Company.

Supplemental coverage

Faculty with base annual salary earnings between $150,000 and $400,000 are automatically enrolled in supplemental disability coverage. The maximum monthly benefit is $20,000 ($7,500 of base benefit plus $12,500 of supplemental coverage). Enrollment is automatic when first eligible without evidence of insurability (with ability to opt out anytime). Evidence of insurability is required if enrollment is requested after opting out of the program.

Voluntary Individual Disability Insurance for Yale School of Medicine Faculty

Unum Individual Disability Insurance (IDI) coverage is an optional benefit available only to Yale School of Medicine faculty members. The Unum plan is available in addition to the university sponsored Group Long-Term Disability plan and the Supplemental Long-Term Disability plan. The Individual Disability Insurance coverage is individually owned and once enrolled, the policy provides for income replacement regardless of place of employment and other sources of income.

Eligible faculty members may only enroll in Unum IDI during the first 90 days of employment at Yale University. Newly hired faculty may participate in the annual open enrollment session, which typically takes place each fall.

A Supplemental IDI Calculator is available to use in determining individual monthly premiums. Premiums are based on the age at which you attained the benefit (or benefit increase).

Please contact Unum directly at (866) 679-3054 with any questions regarding the Supplemental IDI plan. Questions about this UNUM can be directed to Employee Services at 203-432-5552.
