Yale provides basic life insurance coverage at no cost to eligible faculty and staff with the option to purchase additional coverage. Learn more about your life insurance benefit when you retire from Yale.

Supplemental life insurance

As a new hire, you can elect Supplemental Life Insurance coverage (within 60 days), for up to two times your annual earnings (the Guaranteed Issue Amount (GIA)), without Evidence of Insurability (EOI). Requests for increased coverage beyond two times your annual GIA require an EOI.

Basic Life

Yale provides $50,000 of basic term life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment coverage at no cost.

Supplemental Life

You can purchase Supplemental Life Insurance of up to six times your annual salary to a maximum of $2,000,000.

Requests for increased coverage, including a Qualifying Life Event, require a completed and submitted Medical History Statement (EOI). This includes the Guaranteed Issue Amount of two times your annual earnings. Your request must be approved to receive coverage.

For requests to increase your coverage from three to six times your annual GIA, submit an EOI.

Spousal Life

You can purchase an additional $25,000 or $50,000 spousal coverage.

Dependent spouse: for new coverage, provide EOI by completing and submitting a Medical History Statement. Approval is required to receive coverage.

Dependent Life

You can purchase $5,000 or $10,000 in child life coverage.

Dependent child(ren): EOI is not needed. The contribution amount is the same regardless of the number of children you cover.

Postdoctoral Associates

Supplemental Life

Yale Police Benevolent Association (YPBA)

Basic Life

Yale provides $50,000 of basic term life insurance at no cost and accidental death and dismemberment coverage. In addition, there is a “line of duty” accidental death and dismemberment coverage in effect.

Supplemental Life

Requests for increased coverage, including a Qualifying Life Event, require a completed and submitted Medical History Statement (EOI). This includes the Guaranteed Issue Amount of two times your annual earnings. Your request must be approved to receive coverage.
