Flying with Children

Infants up to age 2 are eligible to fly free on the lap of a paying adult. However, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recommends infants travel in an airline-provided bassinet or a properly secured car seat, most of which are certified for airplane use.

After age 2, children must travel in their own seat with a booster or car seat, and ticket purchase is required. Visit the FAA Flying with Children website for more information.

TSA Screening for Children

For domestic travel, all travelers 16 and over must show proper identification at TSA checkpoints. TSA does not require minors under 16 to show a photo ID, but they might be asked for proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. Check with your airline to determine if there are any additional restrictions.

For international travel, all air travelers, including newborn infants, are required to have a valid passport. There are no exceptions to these restrictions for travelers of any age, including infants. If you plan to travel internationally, obtain passports for every member of your family.

Each airline establishes its own guidelines concerning travel by children under age 18 so it’s important to check with the airline directly since the rules and policies may vary.  TSA sets the industry-wide procedures for matters concerning screening and security.
