A message from Janet Lindner: Workplace Update

I write to remind you that until March 31, only staff whose work is deemed critical to current operations are to report to work on campus. Staff not required to report to campus are expected to support the continuity of operations of the university by working remotely if possible. We have taken this action, and others, to curtail the spread of the COVID-19 virus by minimizing contact among employees who must be on campus. The university is not closed.
Classes will continue through online instruction. Critical work will continue to be done on campus, such as patient care, research, clinical operations, student and on-line learning support, network and data centers, public safety, and other operational and administrative services. Other work will continue remotely.
This is an unprecedented moment for all of us, and for Yale, and I am grateful for your patience and community spirit as we work together to protect the health and safety of every Yale community member and to support the research and education mission of this university. I urge you to check the university COVID-19 website regularly for updates and information. This email contains new information about your pay and about working from home.
Staff in Local 34 and Local 35
Some clerical, technical, service, and maintenance staff who are members of bargaining units will be required to perform critical functions on campus between March 16 and March 31. Although the university is not closed, staff required to report to campus to perform critical work will be paid under the contract’s emergency closing provisions. Critical function staff who do not report to work on campus as assigned must use paid time off.
Clerical, technical, service, and maintenance staff who are members of bargaining units and who are available to work from home will be paid their regular weekly pay. Every effort will be made to assign work to staff working from home. Staff members available for work but not assigned work by the university will also receive their regular weekly pay.
Managerial and professional staff
Managerial and professional staff are expected to continue to work, but from home wherever possible. Understanding that some work cannot be done from home, the University will continue to pay those individuals directed to stay home, as long as they are available to work from home if asked by their supervisor.
Picking up equipment to work at home
Staff who need to come to campus to pick up laptops or other equipment should contact their supervisor to arrange a time to do so. To help limit the number of staff on campus, please do not come to campus to retrieve items without arranging a time with your supervisor. Yale ITS has created a webpage with helpful advice about the technologies we are using to work from home.
