What is an internship?
An internship is a learning experience for a young adult, typically a college student, looking to work in a professional area to reflect their studies.

What types of internships does Yale offer?
Internships vary by department but Yale offers internships for high school students, college students, and recent graduates of college.

What are the benefits of hosting an internship?
By hosting an intern, managers benefit from employing enthusiastic talent to work on timely projects and workload, gain supervisory skills, and tap potential future employees. By employing an intern, you also share work ethics and have the opportunity to educate.

Who pays for my intern?
Each department is responsible for the funding of their intern.

Am I involved in the selection process of hiring an intern?
A slate of prospective interns are provided to the hiring manager/departmental contact, interviews are scheduled and conducted by the department.

What is the deadline to ask for an intern?
Interns begin interviewing and accept internships as early as mid-January. It is best to be involved in the process early. Candidates are available throughout the spring. Some internships have application deadline while others are flexible.

Can I hire more than one intern?
Yes, as long as your budget can support it.

Can I hire a Yale college student?
Yes, the process for hiring a Yale college student is done through the Yale Student Employment Office. Creating a requisition in Workday is not recquired. 

Can I hire an intern only for the summer?
Interns attending school locally are often available to work throughout the academic year.

What is the typical length of an internship?
College internships are typically 10-12 weeks. High School internships are 4-6 weeks.

How is the pool of applicants maintained or managed?
New Haven Promise applicants are vetted and approved through their organization. All other applicants apply directly through established departmental guidelines.

Can I hire an unpaid intern?
Occasionally unpaid internships are available but academic credit or stated learning goals must be stated and met.

Can I hire children of employees?
Children of Yale staff are eligible for internships but should not work in the same organization as the employee.

Are all interns paid the same rate?
No, please refer to the attached guide. 

Do you have partnerships with community agencies?
Yale has partnered historically with New Haven Promise for college internships, and the local school district and Echo Perfect 10 for high school internships.
