Required knowledge:

Example 1

General purpose:

Design and produce a variety of publications, print pieces, directional signage, exhibition graphics, and related materials for the programs, activities, exhibitions, public spaces, and behind-the-scenes needs of the Peabody Museum.

Essential duties of position:

  • Design and produce print pieces, signage, and other graphic materials, such as flyers, announcements, invitations, publicity and educational materials for the museum and its component departments utilizing Mac-based graphics software
  • Under the supervision of the head of the Graphics Lab and the Assistant Director, keep track of individual jobs, following the Lab’s tracking system, monitoring each for timeliness, quality, and client service
  • In conjunction with the head of the Graphics Lab, work closely with clients to provide alternative designs for client review where appropriate, develop an initial design, and implement editorial and design changes
  • Attend to urgent and high priority jobs promptly, handling a high volume of detailed work smoothly, calmly, efficiently, and with a high level of client service
  • Provide clients with information about costs and alternative approaches. Develop cost and time estimates
  • Stay current with developments in the print industry, desktop publishing, and vinyl signage field, computer hardware, software, and printer technology
  • Work with exhibition designers, consistent with the overall exhibition design and style guides, produce exhibit graphics and exhibit-related materials
  • Work with the head of the Graphics Lab to train and oversee students, casual staff, interns, and volunteers

Experience and training:

  • Six years of related work experience with four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and a high school level education; or four years related work experience and an Associate degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor degree in a related field (commercial or fine arts or graphic design) or an equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Experience in a graphic design studio, multi-service print shop, or in museum exhibit development and production
  • Preferred: Coursework or a graduate degree in design

Skills and abilities:

  • Familiarity with computer technology and facility with Mac-based graphics programs (Illustrator, PhotoShop, Quark Xpress, PageMaker, etc.)
  • Facility with vinyl sign-making technology and production
  • Willing to work some extra hours from time to time
