Registration & Appointments
New International Students and Scholars must Register with the International Tax Department.
All international students, scholars, faculty and staff receiving any type of payment from the University (i.e., taxable scholarship, fellowship, stipend, wages, etc.) are required to complete certain tax forms in order to properly withhold and report income tax based on U.S. tax status. You are required to contact the International Tax Department at firstname.lastname@example.org to request the link to the Foreign National Information System (FNIS). On the email please include your email @ Yale, name as it appears in the Yale Payroll system, Employee ID and/or University Person Identifier (UPI) your UPI can be found on your Yale ID card.
The information you provide on the FNIS application assists in the determination of your U.S. tax residency, when completing the FNIS is it is important to list all prior visits to the U.S.
Tax appointments may be scheduled if your questions/concerns cannot be solved through email.

Office hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.
Visitors to 25 Science Park will be required to show their Yale ID and check in and out at the front security desk. Once you arrive at your scheduled tax appointment on the sixth floor, please use the phone to call the Tax Department at extension 2-5530 or 2-5597 to announce your arrival.
There is limited visitor parking in the rear of the building; however, we strongly suggest taking the Yale Shuttle. The building at 25 Science Park is located at the Munson/Winchester stop on the Red Route.
Note: If you cannot make the scheduled appointment, please inform the Tax Office by phone or email as soon as possible.
Important - Required documents to bring to the appointment
An individual should bring the following documents to the appointment:
- Visa Stamp
- I-94 form
- Appropriate immigration document (see chart below for examples of immigration documents)

Also, if available, bring to the appointment a confirmation letter describing the position and type of payment at Yale.
