Child Scholarship Plan for Faculty and Staff

Yale provides a Child Scholarship Plan for eligible university staff and faculty. The program directly pays a child’s accredited college or university for a portion of the tuition and eligible fees only. This program is applied to tuition and fees after grants and scholarships from all other sources are allocated. Room and board are not reimbursable. To qualify, both employee and child must satisfy certain criteria and complete an application process

Glossary of Terms

Actual charges – charges calculated as: (tuition + eligible fees minus non-Yale scholarships/grants). Loans, work-study, room and board are not considered actual charges.

Eight terms – the maximum amount of time that a student will receive a scholarship for a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent if the institution operates with another unit of study i.e., 12 terms for trimester schools. Four terms is the maximum for an Associate degree.

Eligible fees – fees that are eligible for reimbursement under the Yale Child Scholarship Plan. View a complete listing of eligible scholarship fees.

Term – term means approximately one-half of an academic year of approximately nine months or the equivalent if the institution operates with another unit of study.

Tuition – a charge or fee for instruction. Tuition does not include room and board.

Eligibility

At the time of the student’s matriculation for the covered term, a parent of the student:

• Must be a regular, full-time member of faculty (100% appointment) or staff (35 hours or more is considered full time), and
• Must have completed six (6) years of continuous, full-time employment at Yale before the student’s first day of class for the semester, or
• With a break in service, the employee receives credit for 48 months of previous full-time, continuous or non-continuous employment. The employee must also complete an additional four years of current full-time, continuous employment, for total of eight years.
• Adopted or stepchildren: The employee and the natural or adoptive parent of the child must be married for at least six years prior to applying for the scholarship. A completed attestation form is required.

Student must meet the following criteria:

• Must be under 25 years of age (Students are not eligible for scholarships for any semester that begins after they reach their 25th birthday)
• Must be enrolled full-time at an accredited four-year or two-year undergraduate college
• Must be a candidate for a bachelor’s or associate’s degree

Scholarship Amount

The Child Scholarship Plan offers the lesser of one of the following:

• Up to 50% of tuition and eligible fees not to exceed the *maximum of $13,980.00 per term (see term definition in glossary) or a prorated equivalent if the institution operates with another unit of study.

OR

• The actual charges (tuition + eligible fees less any non-Yale Scholarships/Grants), up to a maximum of $13,980.00 per term.

Submitting a First Time Application

For each child’s request for scholarship assistance, first-time applicants should complete the Application for Child Scholarship Plan. Applications must be submitted online no later than the end of the “term” with respect to which the award is to be made.

We recommend contacting the institution your child is attending to inquire about their specific policy regarding the reporting of outside grants or scholarships. It’s important to ask about how to report the scholarship and the deadlines for any necessary forms.

Submitting a Tuition Bill

Itemized, full-time tuition bills for the scholarship benefit must be submitted for each semester for payment. Please ensure the bill displays the name of the college, and all charges and credits (i.e. scholarships and/or grants) for the current term. Tuition bills must be submitted during the same term in which the scholarship will apply.

Each bill submitted for scholarship consideration is reviewed on an individual basis. Missing information could cause an error (plus or minus) in the amount of scholarship that a student receives.

Examples of how Yale payments are calculated per term:

Example 1

Amount Yale pays if your child does not receive a non-Yale scholarship/grant* where tuition is $10,000 and eligible fees are $2,000.00:

The amount of the Yale scholarship is the lesser of the following three amounts:

1. The maximum per term: $13,980.00
2. Tuition ($10,000) + eligible fees ($2,000) x .50% = $6,000
3. Tuition ($10,000) + eligible fees ($2,000) – scholarship ($0) = $12,000

In example 1 Yale pays $6,000.00, 50% of tuition and eligible fees.

Example 2

Amount Yale pays if your child receives a partial non-Yale scholarship/grant* where tuition is $10,000 and eligible fees are $2,000.00 and Non-Yale Scholarship/Grant is $8,000.00:

The amount of the Yale scholarship is the lesser of the following three amounts:

1. The maximum per term: $13,980.00
2. Tuition ($10,000) + eligible fees ($2,000) x .50% = $6,000
3. Tuition ($10,000) + eligible fees ($2,000) – scholarship ($8,000) = $4,000

In example 2 Yale pays $4,000.00

Example 3
 

Amount Yale pays if your child receives a partial non-Yale scholarship/grant* where tuition is $30,000 and eligible fees are $2,000.00 and Non-Yale Scholarship/Grant*is $10,000.00:

The amount of the Yale scholarship is the lesser of the following three amounts:

1. The maximum per term: $13,980.00
2. Tuition ($30,000) + eligible fees ($2,000) x .50% = $16,000
3. Tuition ($30,000) + eligible fees ($2,000) – scholarship ($10,000) = $22,000
    

In Example 3 Yale pays the term maximum of $13,980.00.
