Voluntary Individual Disability Insurance for Yale School of Medicine Faculty
Unum Individual Disability Insurance (IDI) coverage is an optional benefit available only to Yale School of Medicine faculty members. The Unum plan is available in addition to the university sponsored Group Long-Term Disability plan and the Supplemental Long-Term Disability plan. The Individual Disability Insurance coverage is individually owned and once enrolled, the policy provides for income replacement regardless of place of employment and other sources of income.
Enrollment in this plan is available to new faculty members hired since August 1 of the previous calendar year, as well as to newly eligible existing faculty from that date onward. Eligible faculty will be contacted via email about the annual open enrollment period, which typically occurs in the fall, and the opt-in process.
Since coverage is specialty-specific and tailored to each individual, interested faculty will be asked to confirm their interest. This confirmation allows Yale University to share the individual’s information with Unum to prepare a personalized quote. During the annual open enrollment period, eligible faculty can enroll without needing to provide Evidence of Insurability (EOI). A Supplemental IDI Calculator is available to use in determining individual monthly premiums. Premiums are based on the age at which you attained the benefit (or benefit increase).
Please contact Unum directly at (866) 679-3054 with any questions regarding the Supplemental IDI plan. Questions about this UNUM can be directed to Employee Services at 203-432-5552.
Short-Term Disability Plan

Benefit
Short-Term Disability (STD), in conjunction with sick pay used during the 1 week Benefit Waiting Period, provides M&P staff salary protection for up to 26 weeks for extended absence due to a non-work related illness or disability. During Weeks 2 – 8, Short-Term Disability provides 100% salary coverage in conjunction with the state PFML wages, and during Weeks 9 – 26, 60% salary coverage minus deductible income (which includes PFML income).
If you are planning to take a leave related to Pregnancy and/or Child Rearing, please visit the Absence Management section for more information.
