Strengthening Community Connections Through Wake Up Wednesday

On Wednesday, February 18, the New Haven Hiring Initiative (NHHI) proudly tabled at the Greater New Haven NAACP Wake Up Wednesday event hosted at McDonald’s - 250 Whalley Ave.

Wake Up Wednesday (WUW) is a grassroots community outreach effort grounded in the mission of meeting people where they are, providing consistent support, and rebuilding trust between communities and the institutions meant to serve them. Each week, teams gather in central neighborhood locations to distribute free meals, groceries, health kits, and other essential resources. WUW creates a welcoming and affirming environment where neighbors can eat, rest, connect, and access meaningful support.

During the event, NHHI staff shared information about current employment opportunities and guided community members on how to apply through the Yale Talent Network. In addition to providing application support, the team distributed NHHI-branded bags and employment readiness materials designed to help job seekers take the next steps toward meaningful work.

It was a valuable opportunity to engage directly with community members, answer questions, and strengthen relationships. The NHHI looks forward to continuing its participation in future Wake Up Wednesday events as part of its ongoing commitment to expanding access to employment opportunities.
