24 New Haven Works members gathered in the Lower Level of 221 Whitney with great excitement to check into a networking event hosted by Yale’s Talent Acquisition and New Haven Hiring Initiative teams on Thursday, April 23. Candidates sat in the center of the room, where they waited to speak to a dozen hiring managers and Talent Acquisition Partners (TAPs) from a wide selection of nine departments with available administrative and financial full-time job openings. These departments included Yale University Art Gallery, Faculty of Arts & Sciences, Human Resources, Yale Health, School of Management, and Yale Medicine Clinical Operations.
Prior to the event, candidates received a targeted list of managers to speak with that closely aligned with their administrative and financial career goals during the first part of the networking event. The second part consisted of an open floor, where candidates could introduce themselves to any department, giving them the chance to explore other opportunities or to circle back to ones they felt strongly about.
Many candidates raved about how well the event went for them. New Haven Works member Thalia Feliciano noted that, while she was already looking forward to the event, in actuality, it “exceeded [her] expectations.” The staff were praised for their kindness. New Haven Works member Susie Kim said, she was “thankful for how each of the hiring managers were so approachable and friendly,” as they offered helpful directions for her job applications. Their approachability allowed nervousness to melt away. Managers provided insightful information around upcoming roles and useful recommendations to strategically structure resumes. Being in-person allowed both candidates and managers to feel each other’s energy and truly get to know one another beyond a screen.
Managers also enjoyed meeting jobseekers from the New Haven community. In fact, some managers from the event have already partnered with New Haven Works to tap into local talent. Associate Director Trish Guccione from the School of Management said, “I met some amazing candidates who are part of the New Haven Works program. We absolutely love working with New Haven Works and being an advocate for this program.” Yale Medicine CARE Center Manager Antoinette Perry also mentioned her department has had a number of successful New Haven Works hires that are flourishing in their roles. After meeting candidates from the event, she is looking forward to “repeating [the process] again.” Seven New Haven Works members have already been hired into regular and temporary roles as a result of the event. Four more are in the interview process.
The New Haven Works Talent Networking event was a major success for both candidates and hiring managers looking to place local talent. Candidates were left feeling empowered and excited for what’s to come next in their professional journeys at Yale.
