As the summer sun began to shine, so did the hustle and bustle of community events. June and July were filled with opportunities to celebrate excellence, serve others, connect with community members, and witness the continued growth and transformation of New Haven.
June 2026
The month began by celebrating New Haven Promise’s fourth cohort of James W.C. Pennington Fellows. Seven outstanding students from the Class of 2026 will continue their educational journeys at Hampton University, Howard University, Morgan State University, North Carolina A&T State University, and Winston-Salem State University through this transformative scholarship. Congratulations to these exceptional scholars as they continue to lead and inspire through their academic excellence and service.
June 5–7 marked the historic Freddy Fixer Weekend. From the gala honoring community leaders and emerging scholars, attended by colleagues from the Yale Black Culture Network and the Yale Office of New Haven Affairs, to the Dixwell Festival, where the New Haven Hiring Initiative engaged with hundreds of community members, the weekend celebrated the very best of New Haven’s rich history, culture, and community spirit.
On June 13, the New Haven Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Epsilon Iota Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. partnered to host the annual Free Market, providing clothing, personal care items, health screenings, food, and other essential resources to hundreds of residents. The New Haven Hiring Initiative was proud to connect attendees with Yale University employment opportunities while highlighting our ongoing partnership with New Haven Works.
On June 19, the New Haven Hiring Initiative joined Yale colleagues in celebrating the grand opening of First Haven, the new headquarters of the Connecticut Center for Arts and Technology (ConnCAT) on Dixwell Avenue. Hearing from the visionaries behind this transformational project and touring the new facility reinforced the significant impact First Haven will have in expanding educational opportunities, workforce development, and community resources for New Haven residents.
On June 20, Juneteenth New Haven brought together remembrance, culture, education, entertainment, and community at the Dixwell Community Q House. The New Haven Hiring Initiative was honored to connect residents with Yale employment resources while celebrating this important day of reflection, resilience, and freedom.
July 2026
On July 10, the New Haven Hiring Initiative’s Community Outreach and Engagement Manager, along with NHHI interns Myla Generette and Lara Medina, volunteered at LEAP’s Annual Read-In. The event was a tremendous success, bringing together community volunteers to celebrate the power of literacy and inspire more than 950 LEAPers, counselors, and swim instructors through the joy of reading.
Volunteers, community leaders, and organizations gathered across the New Haven Green to read with small groups of children, fostering curiosity, imagination, and a lifelong love of books. It was truly an all-hands-on-deck community effort and a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when organizations unite in support of New Haven’s youth.
As the summer continues, the New Haven Hiring Initiative remains committed to strengthening community partnerships, expanding employment opportunities, and supporting initiatives that create meaningful pathways for New Haven residents. We look forward to continuing this important work throughout the remainder of the summer.
