Tell us about yourself.
Hi folks! My name is Meilena Sanchez (she/her). I’m originally from Middlebury, VT, and I made the move to New Haven in 2022. Before relocating, I studied Sociology and Psychology at The University of Vermont and worked as a preschool teacher. In my free time, I enjoy playing Dungeons and Dragons, reading fantasy novels, and cross-stitching.
Tell us about your job search experience.
My experience with New Haven Works was incredibly positive. Sophia Nettles, my job coach, provided constant encouragement and invaluable support during our resume review sessions. Her guidance helped me refine my materials and gain confidence. I can confidently say I wouldn’t have landed at Yale without Sophia’s help and the resources offered by New Haven Works.
Tell us about your current role at Yale.
I began my career at Yale in a temporary Collections Maintenance position at Sterling Memorial Library. Soon after, I transitioned to a fixed-term role in the Retrievals Processing department, where I demonstrated my skills, built connections, and solidified my place on the team. I’ve since moved into a permanent position within the same department.
Starting as a temporary employee gave me an excellent opportunity to showcase my abilities and work ethic. It also allowed me to network and learn about other opportunities, which ultimately led to my fixed-term and permanent roles.
What advice do you have for other job seekers?
To anyone searching for their next opportunity, I cannot stress enough how valuable it is to use local resources like New Haven Works. Their support was instrumental in my success, and I highly encourage others to explore similar programs in their area. Sometimes, outside guidance can make all the difference! What is next for you?
I’m really enjoying my role at Yale, especially within Retrievals Processing, and I plan to continue growing and contributing to this team. While I hope to call Vermont home again someday, I’m committed to staying in New Haven and with Yale for the foreseeable future. Personally, I’m looking forward to carving out time for an art class in the new year to further nurture my creative interests.
