Tell us about your job search experience
During a trying period of unemployment after my previous employer shut down, I was eager to find a role at Yale. I registered with New Haven Works, worked closely with my amazing job coach, and I was eventually hired into a temporary position at YPPS in October 2024. From refining my resume and cover letter to practicing my interview and networking skills, New Haven Works provided crucial support in my job search. I also met with some representatives from the New Haven Hiring Initiative during one of our practice interview sessions, and they made me feel encouraged and validated. New Haven Works made it very clear what steps were needed to move through the application and interview processes. Overall, I felt my hiring process at Yale was quick, and I felt more prepared and confident going into my interviews after working with NHW.

Tell us about your current role at Yale
I am currently a Printing Assistant at YPPS. In my role, I mainly work in production, usually in the bindery area where I create booklets, softcover books, brochures, and many other print media products. I work alongside designers and printers to coordinate our processes to produce products of the highest quality. We support the university ecosystem by covering a variety of different subjects and fields. Quickly, I gained experience, learning to operate various bindery machines, including paper cutters, a booklet maker, and a perfect binder. My favorite parts of my job are creating a product from start to finish and working together with my colleagues towards a common goal.

Nick has been a tremendous addition to the YPPS team and exemplifies the values we strive to uphold every day. His positive attitude, eagerness to learn, and openness to constructive feedback have helped him grow quickly while making meaningful contributions to our department. Nick is dependable, hardworking, and takes great pride in the quality of his work, consistently following through with professionalism and care. He is always willing to take on new challenges, support his teammates, and look for ways to improve our processes. We are grateful to have Nick as part of the YPPS family and look forward to watching his continued growth and success in the years to come.

Mario Maselli, Associate Director, Production Operations, Yale Printing & Publishing Services (YPPS)

You participated in a temporary assignment before you were hired into your regular role. What was the experience like? How does the culture of learning and development at Yale impact you?
Working as a temporary hire at YPPS was a great introduction to the department. My role was to compile materials for Yale Alumni Fund agent packet mailings. I was able to familiarize myself with other production processes in YPPS and eventually got some hands-on experience on the production floor. From starting with a temporary assignment to securing a regular position, my YPPS managers (Lisa Scott, Mario Maselli, and John Poitras) have all been constant sources of support and knowledge. The culture of learning and development at Yale has inspired me to stay curious and build upon my skillset and overall professional growth.

What advice do you have for other jobseekers?
It’s important to stay organized, focused and to be open to all types of job opportunities, especially temporary roles. Don’t sell yourself short and celebrate your achievements – confidence is key!

What is next for you?
I am excited to continue with YPPS, support the department as it grows in new and exciting ways to meet the university’s ever-changing needs, and advocate for the importance of print media and human design in today’s digital world.
