Tell us about yourself.
My name is Lucas Sutherland. While I was raised in Hartford, CT, I currently reside in New Haven. I enjoy hiking, listening to music, working out, going out and socializing, and watching movies. I have four years of Epic experience. Prior to Yale, I worked in registration in the Emergency Room (ER) for two years, then as a Scheduler in Smilow for a year. I am currently a Clinical Receptionist 2 with Yale Medicine in Urology, and have been on the team for about a year now.

Tell us about your job search experience.
After joining New Haven Works (NHW), I was assigned a job coach to help support me in getting a job that aligned with my goals. The process started with constructing my resume and cover letter. Each time I would apply for a job, my coach would send my resume and cover letter to the NHHI team, who would connect with the designated recruiter for that position. I would then get a phone call a little less than a week later from the recruiter to set up an interview. The whole experience with NHW had a huge impact by getting me into a position that fit well with my previous experience.

Tell us about your current roles at Yale.
I either work in the back of the Urology clinic and check out patients, or I work in the front and check in patients. It really depends on what day of the week it is in terms of the volume of patients that I have to check in and out. My hours are 9:00 am to 5:30 pm. My favorite thing about my job is that I get to help out patients that are in need of upcoming appointments because of their cancer. Giving them hope and having them leave the clinic with a great experience.

You are part of the Yale Medicine team supporting specialty clinics helmed by recent NHHI Manager Spotlight Erica Penton. How does the team culture of learning and development impact you?
When I started, I was provided with any training that was needed for me personally. With all the experience in Epic that I already had coming into this job, I did not need too much training specific to that system, and so my training was tailored to me. I have received a great amount of support to learn new skills from all of my coworkers and team lead in terms of making improvements and getting to the next level of service in my role.

What advice do you have for other job-seekers?
I would say that there are great resources out there to help in getting employed, including at the university and especially for those that have been applying and have been rejected in the past. I would tell them about New Haven Works and explain how they helped me get a job, and that they will help them as well. I would tell them not to give up and to keep applying.

What is next for you?
I do not plan to leave any time soon! In due time I do want to see what other positions there are that involve working even more with Epic, which would allow me to expand my career in the future while staying at Yale and on my current team long-term.
