Looking to upskill but not sure where to start?
The Workday Learning catalog offers Yale-curated content ranging from standalone digital courses to blended learning experiences. Staff can easily navigate the site to find assigned training or other resources by topic. Whether you need specific job training to stay compliant, want some AI tips, or you’re looking for some desk exercises, the choices are comprehensive and part of Yale’s new approach to staff development and training.
With 30,000 courses currently available, searching can be daunting at first, but topics are organized into seven categories for easier navigation: Functional Learning; Professional Development; Leadership and Management; Wellness and Worklife; University Culture; Statutory, Regulatory or Policy requirements (SRPR Compliance); and LinkedIn Learning. Yale staff can connect their LinkedIn Learning content to their personal LinkedIn account if they choose.
“The Workday platform is a more robust, streamlined, and user-friendly system that replaced the former TMS in January 2024, offering staff and managers clear insight into required training as well as learning that an individual has chosen to pursue,” said Megan Buda, associate director of learning and development operations.
While departments can require all staff members to complete certain training, managers and department leaders can recommend additional courses directly within their team’s Workday accounts, helping both managers and staff map out meaningful learning and development paths.
Benefits for managers and learners
The Workday Learning Platform gives staff the tools they need at their fingertips to stay compliant, set goals, and use learning to grow. Depending on your learning style, both virtual and in-person options are available. A few popular offerings include workflow management, business writing, Managing at Yale, and the Clerical and Technical Training series that offers curated content throughout the year.
Functional learning, which focuses on the knowledge and skills that are specific to a unit, department, or program, is also available. Courses range from Finance Foundations, to ITS Access and Confidentiality Practice, to Asbestos Awareness, and hundreds of other courses.
Course offerings continue to expand, both through LinkedIn Learning as well as Yale staff-focused content, including the recent launch of a new communication skills curriculum. Organizational Effectiveness and Staff Development’s partnership with AI at Yale provides staff with curated LinkedIn Learning resources that support exploration of AI technologies in their day-to-day work.
Dedicated learning partners
Through the work done as part of the Learning Strategic Initiative, Yale organized staff learning as an inclusive model that considers the unique needs of different departments.
“Our team has worked closely with our sixteen Yale Learning Authorities, Learning Partners, and Staff Learning Council to design the Workday Learning Portal so that every staff member has the tools and knowledge they need to succeed and grow,” said Buda. “We will keep updating and enhancing it using the data, feedback, and insights we receive from our users. This investment in both a staff learning structure and updated learning technology reflects Yale’s commitment to supporting staff growth and career development.”
