Supporting Yale’s Culture of Integrity and Ethical Conduct

    University leadership is dedicated to pursuing Yale’s mission in ways that reflect the university’s highest standards. Additionally, Yale’s many policies, procedures, statements, and reports, together with myriad laws, regulations, and other external requirements that apply to our work, create a broad set of demands on faculty and staff. As the Yale community works together to pursue Yale’s mission in this complex environment, questions inevitably arise about the appropriate and ethical course of action.

    Ethical, Legal, and Professional Standards

    Yale’s Institutional Standards of Conduct provide a high-level summary of well-established principles, rules, and expectations that govern and guide the everyday actions of members of the Yale community. The Standards also include references to specific policies and procedures and other definitive sources that contain more information.

    The Standards link Yale’s mission and values to applicable policies and other requirements, and they provide a framework for navigating ethical decision-making. Adherence to these Standards is critical to maintaining and supporting a culture of integrity and ethical conduct at Yale.

    Raising Concerns

    All members of the Yale community have a role in upholding Yale’s expectations for integrity and ethical conduct. The university strongly encourages Yale community members to report concerns or suspected violations of the Institutional Standards of Conduct, Yale policies, or applicable laws and regulations to the appropriate university resource. Some examples of areas you may have concerns about are listed below.

    • Conflicts of Interest or Commitment
    • Fraud/theft
    • Financial irregularities
    • HIPAA or privacy compliance concerns
    • Inappropriate workplace behavior
    • Information security concerns
    • Medical billing concerns
    • Policy violations
    • Regulatory violations
    • Research compliance concerns
    • Environmental health and safety concerns
    • Scientific misconduct
    • Sexual misconduct

    The University Hotline

    If you do not know whom to contact or wish to report a concern anonymously, you can use the University Hotline. The Hotline allows you to bring questions and concerns to the attention of appropriate university officials in an anonymous or identified way. Concerns are investigated, and if they are substantiated, appropriate action is taken.

    Yale does not tolerate retaliation against a person who, in good faith, files a complaint, reports a concern, or cooperates with a university investigation. The university firmly enforces its policy against retaliation.
