Heidi delivers Valentine's Day love and happiness

February 12, 2021

February can be a dreary month. So Heidi, the Yale Police Department’s (YPD) service dog, spent a few days spreading some love and happiness around campus. YPD Officer Richie Simons, her handler, came up with the idea of delivering, in person, Valentine’s cards to staff members.

Over two days, they visited Yale Health, Yale Medicine Coordination, Appointment, Referral & Engagement (CARE) Center, the Lanman Center vaccine clinic, 221 Whitney Avenue, and some downtown retail stores. “I wanted to put smiles on the faces of our front line health care workers, Yale staff, and local business owners. It’s been a tough year for everybody,” said Officer Simons.

Simons had a card made up with Heidi’s photo on it. These cards were given out at each space they visited, and Heidi posed for pictures with staff members. “There was an overwhelming response to Heidi’s visit. One staff member at the vaccine clinic said she asked to be assigned there knowing she’d meet Heidi,” said Simons.
