New Haven Promise successfully partnered with 31 Yale departments and 20 New Haven organizations to place 117 interns for the summer. Among these, Yale hosted 80 interns, reflecting a remarkable increase of 62% compared to the previous summer. The collaborative effort and support from various departments played a pivotal role in achieving this substantial growth. The range of internships provided encompassed both hybrid arrangements and on-site experiences.

Over the course of the summer, the New Haven Promise interns participated in various professional and personal development workshops, including topics like: Growing your Network (including LinkedIn), Microsoft Office Skill-up, and Financial Stability in your twenties. These workshops equipped interns with valuable skills and knowledge that will serve them well as they transition into their future careers. The interns actively engaged in special projects and meaningful tasks within their respective departments, contributing directly to their departmental objectives.

Ashlyn Mallard and Kayla Lugo, who served as Yale HR Rotational Interns, supported the New Haven Hiring Initiative, HR ITS, Diversity Programs, and Yale Academic Appointee Administration/YSM Faculty Support. Throughout the summer, they acquired new technical skills, practiced public speaking, conducted data analysis using tools like Excel, researched, and honed their content creation skills using platforms like Canva and Adobe. Their skill development was particularly evident in their intern project, where they organized and hosted a community event to celebrate National Intern Day on July 27th, 2023.

As the summer came to a close, the finale event, end-of-summer intern presentations, and the written intern reviews submitted by their respective managers solidified a successful summer. A consistent theme emerged from both sides, with interns expressing their gratitude for the enriching experiences and skills gained during their internships. Managers, in turn, praised their interns for their contributions to the departments by highlighting their positive interactions and the intern impact during the summer.

One intern, Kayla Lugo, emphasized how her internship experience enhanced her confidence in searching for job opportunities as a recent graduate. She noted the positive influence on her understanding of workplace norms, technical skills, and communication abilities—both written and verbal.

Reflecting on our internship program, I am immensely proud of the growth I witnessed in my interns. Their eagerness to learn and contribute was evident from day one – Corey

Darice Corey, Director of Web and IT Planning, shared her perspective as a first-time manager participating in the New Haven Promise internship program. She commended the growth she observed in her interns, highlighting their enthusiasm to learn and contribute from the very beginning. The interns participated in diversified tasks, from communication with staff members of varying levels to developing training materials. They also contributed to significant initiatives, such as inventory management for NextGen networking and the successful launch of the upgraded YaleSites platform. Corey expressed anticipation for the possibility of their return for the following summer due to their impressive achievements.

Overall, the 2023 New Haven Promise Internship season highlighted the valuable experiences gained by interns and the significant contributions they made to various departments and organizations, setting a positive precedent for future growth.
