Tell us about yourself.

Since moving to New Haven in 2001, I’ve deeply rooted myself in the community and its educational pursuits. I graduated from Career High School in 2014, an accomplishment that paved the way for me to become a New Haven Promise Scholar. This accolade allowed me to further my education, and in 2018, I proudly obtained my Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences with a concentration in pre-health from Quinnipiac University. During these transformative college years, the support and guidance of New Haven Promise were invaluable, ensuring a smooth transition through my academic journey. I took on the role of a New Haven Promise Ambassador from 2015 to 2016, supporting the goals of New Haven Promise. My quest for knowledge didn’t stop there; I am currently diving deeper into my academic pursuits by working towards an MBA degree at Quinnipiac. Outside the realm of academia, I find solace and joy in simple pleasures, whether it’s taking leisurely walks along the beach, binge-watching my favorite comedy series, or enjoying a cup of Starbucks coffee.

Throughout my job search journey, I’ve explored various platforms, ranging from attending Career Fairs to leveraging LinkedIn for opportunities. However, it was New Haven Works that stood out as a pivotal source in aiding my pursuit, especially in securing a role at Yale University. My career coach exhibited immense honesty, support, and meticulous attention to refining my resume. Through the efforts of New Haven Works, I was fortunate enough to land a position as a Temporary Administrative Assistant for the New Haven Hiring Initiative. This role provided me with the unique experience of working closely with the dedicated NHHI team. Their guidance and unwavering support significantly enhanced my career trajectory. The time I spent with them was not only enriching but also instrumental in providing me with a deeper understanding of recruitment processes and databases. I remain deeply grateful for the insights and experiences garnered during this period.

Tell us about your current roles at Yale.

My foray into the professional world began as an intern at the Project Management Office of the CEO at Yale ITS. There, under the mentorship of my former manager, I was introduced to various software tools like SharePoint, OneDrive, and advanced functions in Excel. Little did I know, this experience would ignite my passion for Project Management. After my internship, I ventured into various roles across different organizations, exploring and seeking a career that truly resonated with my passions. The allure of Yale University remained strong, and I harbored aspirations of returning to Yale for project management. Fast forward to the present, I hold the position of Administrative Services Supervisor for the Department of Neurosurgery, leading a robust team of five Senior Administrative Assistants. I take pride in fostering a work environment reminiscent of the values I’ve attained from past managers - emphasizing honesty, supporting educational and career aspirations, and offering guidance. My typical day is a whirlwind of meetings, managing my team’s portfolio, and assisting faculty with operational tasks ranging from space management to Workday data entry. The efficiency with which I can manage these high-level responsibilities can be attributed to my Senior Administrative Team. Their diligence, impeccable work ethic, and the transparent and trusting relationship we’ve built are foundational to our success. They are the backbone of my role, and I consider them my village in this professional journey.

What advice do you have for other job-seekers?

When asked about advice for other jobseekers, particularly those with research goals, my foremost recommendation is to be patient, perseverant, and maintain a curious mindset. It’s essential to have a clear vision of your end goal, as it serves as the beacon guiding your professional journey. Once you have that vision, take the time to meticulously create a game plan, strategically mapping out each step towards achieving your ambitions. This roadmap not only ensures that you stay on track but also acts as a constant source of motivation during challenging times. To all the applicants out there, remember that every research objective, no matter how daunting, can be realized with the right strategy and mindset. So, always be inquisitive, stay committed to your goals, and never lose sight of the bigger picture. Your persistence and dedication will undoubtedly pave the way to your success.

What is next for you?

In contemplating the next phase of my professional journey, I’m keenly aware of the significance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in today’s evolving workplace. I’ve recently joined the DEI committee in the Department of Neurosurgery, aiming to contribute to these critical conversations and initiatives. My experiences so far have only bolstered my desire to delve deeper into these areas of focus. Parallel to this, I’m setting my sights on a career progression: I aspire to step into the role of a Project Manager. This ambition is fueled by my passion to delve deeper into the realm of data analysis, providing valuable insights and support that can drive decision-making processes. This dual path of DEI engagement and role enhancement perfectly encapsulates my immediate aspirations on campus. I’m excited about the journey ahead, both in terms of personal growth and contributing to a broader organizational mission.
