Brian Donnelly Retires After 40-years of Service
February 27, 2024
Public Safety sends farewell wishes to Lieutenant Brian Donnelly on his recent retirement from the Yale Police Department (YPD).
A 40-year law enforcement veteran, Donnelly started his career at the FBI, where he worked for five years before accepting a position as a police officer with the New Haven Police Department (NHPD). He worked as a patrol officer, temporary detective, arson investigator, and bicycle officer. After serving 23 years at NHPD, Donnelly accepted a position with YPD.
Donnelly worked in the Community Impact Unit, rose to the rank of sergeant, oversaw the Investigative Service Unit, and ended his 17-year career at YPD as a lieutenant.
“Lieutenant Donnelly has a servant’s heart and loves his job. He is a mentor, friend, and confidant to many who have risen through the ranks at the Yale Police Department. He is a consummate professional and gives 100% to anything he is asked to do,” said Chief of Police Anthony Campbell.
A teacher piqued Donnelly’s interest in law enforcement during his eighth-grade criminal justice class. The teacher covered policing, the court system, and corrections. He decided that he wanted to become a prosecutor. His plans changed when his mother suddenly passed away.
“I worked very hard to get through college,” said Donnelly. “When I graduated from the University of New Haven, it was time to put law school on hold and get a job. I unfortunately never fulfilled my dream to attend law school, but I have no regrets!”
Throughout his career, Donnelly received numerous awards and letters of commendation from the FBI, NHPD, and YPD. His proudest moments were when he trained someone and saw their career flourish. Donnelly said helping people improve their lives was important to him.
“A school bus stopped abruptly before me as I stood on a corner. The driver jumped out, hugged me, and began to cry. They reminded me that when I apprehended them, they were addicted to drugs, selling drugs, and carrying a firearm. They also shared how they were married with several children and had turned their life around. It’s events like these and others that truly impact your life and theirs,” Donnelly said.
