Representative duties:

  • Selects and pastes labels, pockets and plates into library materials
  • Performs simple binding and repairs. Performs binding preparation of library material. Checks material for accuracy and completeness of the order. May request binding supplies
  • Keyboards call numbers, labels, orders, cards, forms, and general correspondence
  • Searches for misplaced books. Collates volumes
  • Answers general questions from patrons and library staff
  • Maintains files and listings
  • Photocopies material
  • Retrieves and delivers library material
  • May assist at circulation desk or file catalog cards
  • Performs clerical functions incidental to library activities

Required knowledge:

  • General knowledge, high school level; detailed but narrow work-related knowledge
  • Limited acquaintance with University organizational policies and procedures

  • Copies data from standard or easily understandable formats

  • Files already labeled material using a straightforward alphabetical, numerical or chronological system

Example 1

General purpose:

Under supervision, perform binding preparation for library materials for Sterling Memorial Library, Special Collections and other University Departments and using the Notis labeling system, prepare these and other materials for shelving.

Essential duties:

  • Sort incoming materials according to binding methods
  • Status track pamphlets to Collection Care Program
  • Collate serial volumes. May have to check with Serial staff in case of problems
  • Process serial and monographic volumes by inputting information into the LARS automated system database, instructing commercial binder in proper setup of spine titles for submitted materials
  • Pack processed materials in boxes for shipping to binder. Maintain in-house files for materials sent to binder
  • Search stacks for existing title set-ups for vols. not found in database
  • Unpack returned books from binder, check for completeness and accuracy of spine titles
  • Prepare returned books for shelving, by stamping section using YUL identification stamp
  • Apply fund donor bookplates
  • Apply date due slips
  • Produce call number labels, using Notis automated labeling system, cut and apply to spine
  • Apply barcodes to books and status track to SML Circulation, departmental libraries, or special collections
  • Revise books, include revision numbers and keep statistics
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned

Experience and training:

  • One year of related work experience and a high school level education or an equivalent of experience and education

Skills and abilities:

  • Accurate keyboarding
  • Reference must indicate excellent attendance and punctuality, the ability to work accurately and with attention to detail
  • Ability to push book trucks and lift heavy materials
